The craft of knitting garments such as
scarf's is an important trade in some countries.
Hand-knitted scarf's are still common as gifts as well.
In haute couture, the French fashion company, Hermès is famous internationally
for its scarf's.
In cold climates, a thick knitted scarf (also called a muffler in America),
often of wool, is tied around the neck to keep warm. This is usually accompanied
by a warm hat and heavy coat.
In drier, dustier climates, a thin headscarf, kerchief, or bandanna is often
worn over the head to keep the hair clean. Over time, this custom has evolved
into a fashionable item in many cultures, particularly among women. The
cravat, an ancestor of the necktie and bow tie, evolved from scarf's of this
sort in Croatia. |

A shawl (from Persian Shāl ) is an extremely
simple item of clothes, loosely worn over the shoulders, upper body and
arms, sometimes also over the head. It is usually a rectangular or square
piece of cloth, often folded to make a triangle, but can also be triangular
in shape to begin with.
The first shawls, or "shals" were part of traditional male costume in Kashmir.
They were woven in extremely fine woolen twill, some were even said to
be so fine as to fit through a ring. They could be in one color only, woven
in different colors (called tilikar), ornately woven or embroidered (called
ameli).
Indian shawls also known as Cashmere ( Kashmir) shawls were high-fashion
garments in Western Europe in the early- to mid-nineteenth century. Imitation
Indian shawls woven in Paisley, Renfrewshire are the origin of the name
of the traditional paisley pattern.
