STITCH EXPLANATION:
Block 3 dc in same st or space.
Shell (2 dc, chain 1, 2 dc) in same space.
PONCHO
Starting at neck edge, chain 36 (36, 40) loosely; join with slip st to form ring, being careful not to twist chain.
Rnd 1 (RS) chain 3, make 2 more dc in same beg ch, [skip next ch, 3 dc in next ch] 17 (17, 19) times,
skip next ch; join with slip st in top of beg chain – 18 (18, 20) Blocks.
Rnd 2 Slip st in space, chain 3, 2 dc in same space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space between Blocks]
7 (7, 8) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space (corner made), [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in
next space between Blocks] 8 (8, 9) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space; join with
slip st in top of beg chain – 20 (20, 22) Blocks between 2 corners.
Rnd 3 Slip st in space, chain 3, 2 dc in same space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space between Blocks]
8 (8, 9) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space
between Blocks] 9 (9, 10) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space; join with slip st in
top of beg chain – 22 (22, 24) Blocks between 2 corners.
Rnd 4 Slip st in space, chain 3, 2 dc in same space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space between Blocks]
9 (9, 10) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space
between Blocks] 10 (10, 11) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space; join with slip st
in top of beg chain – 24 (24, 26) Blocks between 2 corners.
Rnd 5 Slip st in space, chain 3, 2 dc in same space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next space between Blocks]
10 (10, 11) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space, [skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in space
between Blocks] 11 (11, 12) times, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in next space; join with slip st
in top of beg chain – 26 (26, 28) Blocks between 2 corners.
Rnds 6-10 (6-13, 6-15) Slip st into space, chain 3, 2 dc in same space, [3 dc in space between next 2
Blocks] across to next corner, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in ch3-space of corner, [3 dc in space between next
2 Blocks] to corner, (3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc) in corner; join with slip st in top of beg chain. There will be 36
(42, 48) Blocks between 2 corners at end of Rnd 10 (13, 15).
EDGING
Rnd 1 Slip st in first space, chain 1, *sc in each of next 3 dc, sc in next space between Blocks, chain 3,
skip next Block, (2 dc, chain 1, 2 dc) in next space between Blocks (Shell made), chain 3, skip next Block,
sc in space between Blocks; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of first sc – 12 (14, 16)
Shells.
Rnd 2 Slip st to 2nd sc, chain 1, *sc in 3 sc, chain 3, skip next sc, (Shell, chain 1, Shell) in next ch1-space,
chain 3, skip next sc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of first sc – 24 (28, 32) Shells.
Rnd 3 Slip st over to 2nd sc, * sc in next sc, skip next sc, chain 3, shell in next 3 ch1-spaces, chain 3, skip
next sc; rep from * around, join with slip st in top of first sc – 36 (42, 48) shells.
Rnd 4 chain 1, * sc in sc, chain 3, shell in next 3 ch1-spaces, chain 3; rep from * around, join with a slip st
in top of first sc – 36 (42, 48) shells.
COLLAR
Rnd 1 With RS facing, knitting across opposite side of foundation chain on neck edge, join yarn in any
chain at back neck edge. chain 1, sc in same chain and each chain around; do not join; knit in a spiral. Mark
first sc and move marker up as knit progresses – 36 (36, 40) sc.
Rnds 2-4 Sc in each sc around.
At end of Rnd 4, join with slip st in next sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PATTERN
1. Q: In Rnd 3, where it says “Slip st in first space (knitting around post of last sc made) inches, what’s the post?
A: sc was knitted to create the last "space" of the each round. knit around the body of the sc
(instead of in the top 2 loops) as if it were a ch-1 space.
2. Q: Where is the other corner?
A: There are 2 "corners" made in each rnd. One is at the center front and one at the center
back of the poncho. The one corner is (3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) halfway through the rnd. The other
corner is knitted in 2 pieces. You do half of the first corner at the beginning of the rnd (chain 3, 2
dc in same space), then finish it at the end of the rnd (3 dc in same space as beg, sc in 3rd chain
of turning chain to join). This produces a complete "corner".
3.
Q: In the Edging instructions, Rnd 2 reads: “Slip st in first space, (chain 3, dc, chain 1, 2 dc) in
same space, *chain 3, skip next sc, sc in next 3 sc, chain 3, (Shell, chain 1, Shell) in next ch1-space;
repeat from * 18 more times, chain 3, skip next sc, sc in next 3 sc, chain 3, Shell in same space as
beg; join with sc in top of beg chain – 40 Shells. inches but there is no sc in the previous rnd.
A: There are 5 sc between the shells in Rnd 1 of the Edging. See the underlined phrases:
Rnd 1 Sl st in first space, chain 3, dc in same space, * chain 3, skip next 2 dc, sc in next 5 dc, chain 3,
skip next 2 dc, shell between next 2 blocks; rep from * 18 times, chain 3, skip next 2 dc, sc in
next 5 dc, chain 3, skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in same space as beg, sc in 3rd chain of turning chain to join – 20 shells.
4. Q: In the Edging, Round 1, what is a shell?
A: Please see the Stitch Explanations section at the beginning of the pattern, where the definition is "Shell (2 dc, chain 1, 2 dc) in same
space."
5. Q: In the Edging instructions, Rnd 2 asks you to knit into the next chain 1 space but there is no chain 1 space in the previous rnd.
A: The chain 1 space is part of the shells knitted in Rnd 1. |
