While the process of knitting is
important in itself as an activity, there is also the underlying acknowledgement
for the knitter that you are creating a garment that must be kept in mind while knitting.
This helps you focus on what you want to accomplish.
There is a link between the process of knitting and the end garment.
While the process is important to the knitters, there is also a sense that one must strive for perfection in the end.
When the garment is completed to perfection or near perfection, the knitters enjoy a strong sense of pride and achievement.
It provides the knitter with relaxation, a means to expend mental energy, a sense of pride and accomplishment,
and a coherent sense of self. |

Short Rows:
The short rowing technique is an invaluable addition to your knitting
repertoire. Many people think it is too difficult, but with the aid of a
good knitting technique reference, it is easy to learn and perfect. And
once you feel comfortable with it, you will find many uses for it. For
example, short rowing set-in shoulder slopes makes a much smoother
finish than casting off stitches in steps. |
 |
Backstitch:
This stitch is most commonly used for ribbed seams and set-in armhole
seams.
1. Place both pieces right sides together, on a table or your lap. Pin
the seam to keep it from shifting.
2. Using a tapestry needle, secure the yarn at the beginning with a
couple of overlapping running stitches, then move one stitch ahead.
3. Put the needle into the left end of the last stitch and bring it out
one stitch ahead. Pull the yarn through to the front. Repeat until seam
is finished. |

Invisible seam ( Mattress stitch ):
This method of sewing side seams and underarm seams provides the
cleanest finish. It takes a little longer, but the result is well worth
it.
1. Place both pieces right side up, seams abutting each other, on a
table or your lap. Using a tapestry needle, secure the yarn at the
beginning of the seam.
2. Pick up the cross thread one stitch in from the edge, one side, then
the other, for each row up the seam. Keep the pieces right side up as
you work on them.
3. Pull the seam from top to bottom every few inches, to keep it
elastic. |
 |
Herringbone stitch casing:
The Herringbone Stitch Casing can be used for skirt waistbands to
provide the ease of elastic without the bulk of a folded band casing. It
is a ribbed band with elastic on the back enclosed with a herringbone
stitch.
1. Knit the waistband in 1x1 ribbing (or other ribbing of your choice)
as for a normal ribbed band, to a depth of your elastic width plus 1 cm
(0.5”) at least. For example, if you want to use 1” elastic, the
waistband ribbing should be at least 1.5”.
2. Cut the elastic the length of your waist measurement. (It is to
comfortably fit the waist size, with a bit of stretch and a one inch
overlap. The final fitted length will probably be several inches less.)
3. Lay the elastic in position inside the waistband. Thread a blunt
sewing needle with the skirt yarn or a matching finer yarn and work
herringbone stitch over the elastic, working into every alternate rib
stitch. Be careful not to work the stitches too tightly and not to catch
the elastic in the sewing. Test for fit. a) If there is a side opening
(e.g. for a zipper), stitch the ends of the elastic to the ends of the
waistband. b) If no side opening, overlap the elastic ends and pin,
being careful not to twist the elastic and easing to fit through the
casing. Adjust, then sew the ends together.

Knitting is very good for you, it keeps you healthy and sane.
Knitting makes you think. It gets your brain occupied.
Knitting is a mechanism for breaking up the monotony of the daily chores.
It provides the knitter with an activity that takes away any tension she might be experiencing, and offers her
the opportunity to use mental energy and concentration apart from her routine of household chores.
One sees that knitting is a means of preventing one from becoming overwhelmed with what is happening around oneself. Knitting is important in
providing an outlet for mental energy. It keeps you more alert.
It makes you concentrate. Knitting is a way to maintain mental alertness by exercising the mind.
The knitting is a repetitive activity, a habit, that is used to help create a coherent sense of self in the face
of threatening and tense experiences such as boredom, age, illness and isolation.
It is repeatedly used to release the tension the women face daily, and helps prevent the self from fragmenting or "cracking up."
And last but not least; There is a sense of pride that comes from a finished piece of knitting.
My favorite question from people is; did you knit this your self ??? It makes me proud to say; YES. |

Haiku, just for a little inspiration
Hurt no living thing:
Ladybird, nor butterfly,
Nor moth with dusty wing,
Nor cricket chirping cheerily,
Nor grasshopper so light of leap,
Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat,
Nor harmless worms that creep.

How-to join a new yarn
most projects require more than one skein of yarn.
It is best to add new
yarn at the beginning of a row so the joining is not visible in the middle
of a piece of work.
|
 |
How-to join new yarn in
the middle of a row, Thread the new yarn in a
needle and weave it back through the old yarn for several stitches, or knit
a few stitches with the old and the new yarn (2 threads). Leave short end
of yarn on back of work and cut off when project is finished. I will never join new yarn in the middle of the row.
