Cable patterns tend to "pull in," giving more stitches per width than stockinette, garter or seed stitch.

Cables are usually made on a background of reverse stockinette stitch. You will need a cable needle.
You can use stitch markers to set off the stitches to be cabled. Go to my cable stitches page for patterns.

I have created knitting patterns with gauges for cable sweaters and cable cardigans in 6 sizes.
I think drop shoulders are the best to knit a cable sweater or cardigan.

Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

Tips for regular inch increments
17.7 = 17.75 = 17 3/4 inches. 18,8 = 18.75 = 18 3/4 inches. 9.9 = 10 inches and so on.
Knowing this will make it easy to just round up or down as they are such small increments.

3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole. Continue until armhole measures 8,6 ins (56 rows),
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 35 stitches. Slip the next 28 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 35 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row twice, until 33 stitches remain.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

BUTTON BAND / COLLAR:
-- knitted in two pieces. Alternatively, you can knit button band and buttonhole band together in one piece on Circular needles.
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 4 needles pick up and knit 158 stitches
(approximately 6 stitches for each 7 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and center of back of neck.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 8 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,4 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: Sew sleeve top to armhole, sew any remaining seams. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

BACK:
1. Cast on 115 stitches on size 4 needles. knit in ribbing for 3,0 ins. Inc 8 stitches evenly across the row to 123 stitches
total.
2. Change to size 5 needles and Cable pattern. knit even until piece measures 11,7 ins (76 rows), excl. hem.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole. Continue until armhole measures 9,5 ins (62 rows),
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 46 stitches. Slip the next 31 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 46 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, until 43 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 10,2 ins (66 rows). Cast off 43 shoulder stitches loosely.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 55 stitches on size 4 needles. knit in ribbing for 3,0 ins. Inc 4 stitches evenly across the row to 59 stitches total.
2. Change to size 5 needles and Cable pattern. knit even until piece measures 11,7 ins (76 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at left end for armhole. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 4th row 13 times, then every 5th row twice,
until 43 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 10,2 ins (66 rows). Cast off 43 shoulder stitches loosely.
6. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 42 stitches on size 4 needles. knit in ribbing for 2,5 ins. Inc 4 stitches evenly across the row to 46 stitches total.
2. Change to size 5 needles and Cable pattern.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 3rd row 7 times, then every 4th row 18 times to 96 stitches (93 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 14,7 ins (96 rows), excluding hem.
5. Cast off loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

BUTTON BAND / COLLAR:
-- knitted in two pieces. Alternatively, you can knit button band and buttonhole band together in one piece on Circular needles.
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 4 needles pick up and knit 169 stitches
(approximately 6 stitches for each 7 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and center of back of neck.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 10 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,4 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: Sew sleeve top to armhole, sew any remaining seams. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

16,9 for body and sleeves
2,6 for ribbing and/or hems
1,2 for collar/hood (includes cardigan front bands)
