A good cardigan is often a suitable way to add warmth on chilly fall days.

Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 31,3 cms (100 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 8 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Continue until armhole measures 22,5 cms (72
rows).
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 34 stitches. With a second ball of yarn, cast off the next 49 stitches.
knit remaining 34 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 times, until 29 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 25,0 cms (80 rows). Place 29 shoulder stitches on holder.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 60 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 7,0 cms. Inc 4 stitches evenly across the row to 64 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 31,3 cms (100 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 22,5 cms (72 rows).
4. Shape neck. Right side of knit facing. Cast off next 22 stitches. Next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) every
row 5 times, until 29 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 25,0 cms (80 rows). Place 29 shoulder stitches on holder.
6. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Graft shoulder seams on 29 stitches.

SLEEVES:
1. Sleeve is grafted onto the body of the sweater, and knitted down to the hem. With size 4 needles pick up and
knit 122 stitches between the armhole cast-offs.
2. knit even for 10 rows, then dec 1 st at each end of every 4th row 20 times, then every 5th row 10 times to 62 stitches
(140 rows total).
3. knit even until sleeve measures 45,0 cms (144 rows). Dec 5 stitches evenly across the last row (57 stitches remaining).
4. Hem. Change to size 3 needles. knit 22 rows in K1P1 ribbing. Cast off remaining stitches loosely.

SHAPED HOOD:
1. Use an open (looped) cast on with 144 stitches on size 3 needles.
2. Folded front band. knit even for 16 rows, with lace holes for drawstring near the ends of row 4 (or row 12 for
lace holes on outside of band). To complete the band, graft the cast-on stitches to the last row knitted.
3. Change to size 4 needles with Stocking Stitchand knit 5 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then every
following 5th row 9 times, until 124 stitches remain. knit even until piece measures 17,5 cms ( 56 rows), excluding
front band.
4. Cast off 35 stitches at beg of next 2 rows. knit even on remaining 54 stitches for 14,8 cms (48 rows). Cast off loosely.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 174 stitches
(approximately 9 stitches for each 10 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of hood.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 11 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 8 buttons, the first one 1,3 cms above the band bottom, the last one 1,3 cms below the band
top. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 8,3 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING:
1. Sew armhole castoff sections (on the front and back) to equal length along the armhole end of the sleeve side
edges, then sew remaining side and sleeve seams. Sew back seam(s) of hood. Placing hood bands at center front,
sew bottom of hood (including bands) to neckline. Thread a drawstring if required.
2. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 180 stitches
(approximately 9 stitches for each 10 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of hood.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 11 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 8 buttons, the first one 1,4 cms above the band bottom, the last one 1,4 cms below the band
top. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 8,6 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING:
1. Sew armhole castoff sections (on the front and back) to equal length along the armhole end of the sleeve side
edges, then sew remaining side and sleeve seams. Sew back seam(s) of hood. Placing hood bands at center front,

KNIT A TENSION SWATCH FIRST

STITCH OR KNITTING GAUGE, AND TENSION: depends on the pattern of stitches in the fabric and the tension of the
individual knitter or crocheter ( or how tightly one knits or crochets, and thick or thin yarns produce different stitches ).

Gauge (Stocking Stitch over 4 in = 10 cm): 24,0 stitches by 32,0 rows.
Body knit by hand on 4 mm needles
Ribbing knit by hand on 3 mm needles

Note: There may be sections where there are two shapings to knit at the same time (necklines or waist shaping).

BACK:
1. Cast on 152 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 8,0 cms. Inc 5 stitches evenly across the row to 157 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 32,5 cms (104 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 10 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Continue until armhole measures 25,0 cms (80
rows).
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 40 stitches. With a second ball of yarn, cast off the next 57 stitches.
knit remaining 40 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 times, until 35 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 27,5 cms (88 rows). Place 35 shoulder stitches on holder.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 74 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 8,0 cms. Inc 2 stitches evenly across the row to 76 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 32,5 cms (104 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 25,0 cms (80 rows).
4. Shape neck. Right side of knit facing. Cast off next 26 stitches. Next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) every
row 5 times, until 35 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 27,5 cms (88 rows). Place 35 shoulder stitches on holder.
6. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Graft shoulder seams on 35 stitches.

SLEEVES:
1. Sleeve is grafted onto the body of the sweater, and knitted down to the hem. With size 4 needles pick up and
knit 134 stitches between the armhole cast-offs.
2. knit even for 13 rows, then dec 1 st at each end of every 4th row 18 times, then every 5th row 13 times to 72 stitches
(150 rows total).
3. knit even until sleeve measures 48,0 cms (154 rows). Dec 8 stitches evenly across the last row (64 stitches remaining).
4. Hem. Change to size 3 needles. knit 22 rows in K1P1 ribbing. Cast off remaining stitches loosely.

SHAPED HOOD:
1. Use an open (looped) cast on with 149 stitches on size 3 needles.
2. Folded front band. knit even for 22 rows, with lace holes for drawstring near the ends of row 5 (or row 16 for
lace holes on outside of band). To complete the band, graft the cast-on stitches to the last row knitted.
3. Change to size 4 needles with Stocking Stitchand knit 5 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then every
following 5th row 9 times, until 129 stitches remain. knit even until piece measures 17,8 cms ( 56 rows), excluding
front band.
4. Cast off 35 stitches at beg of next 2 rows. knit even on remaining 59 stitches for 14,7 cms (48 rows). Cast off loosely.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 188 stitches
(approximately 9 stitches for each 10 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of hood.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 11 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 8 buttons, the first one 1,4 cms above the band bottom, the last one 1,4 cms below the band
top. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 9,0 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING:
1. Sew armhole castoff sections (on the front and back) to equal length along the armhole end of the sleeve side
edges, then sew remaining side and sleeve seams. Sew back seam(s) of hood. Placing hood bands at center front,
sew bottom of hood (including bands) to neckline. Thread a drawstring if required.
2. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

REQUIRED AMOUNT OF YARN: ( APPROX. ):
604,5 for body and sleeves
81,6 for ribbing and/or hems
121,7 for collar/hood (includes cardigan front bands)
807,8 Grams TOTAL
