Free men's knitting pattern for a set-in shoulder, round neck sweater

Categories of men's sweaters: turtlenecks , polo necks , crew necks , V-necks and boat necks .
Turtle necks are standout sweaters, known for protecting the neck against cold elements.
Polo neck sweaters are between polo shirts and traditional men's sweaters.
Crew neck sweaters are far and away the most popular sweaters among men.
V-neck sweaters are classic, old country standards.

Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

BACK:
1. Cast on 93 stitches on size 3,5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 7,0 cms. Inc 7 stitches evenly across the row to 100 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4,5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 30,8 cms (74 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 5 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 8
rows until 82 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 23,3 cms (56 rows), with 82 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 28 stitches. Slip the next 26 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 28 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, until 25 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 23,3 cms (row 56), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 8 stitches at armhole edge twice, then cast off 9 stitches at armhole edge.

FRONT:
1-2 Follow steps 1 and 2 as for back.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at both ends, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 15,8 cms (38 rows), with
82 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 33 stitches. Slip the next 16 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 33 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 8 times, until 25 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 23,3 cms (56 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 43 stitches on size 3,5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 6,0 cms. Inc 4 stitches evenly across the row to 47 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4,5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 5 times, then every 9th row 6 times to 69 stitches (94 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 42,0 cms (102 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 5 stitches at beg of next two rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 8 times, then dec 1 st at
each end of every 3rd row 4 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 7 times. Cast off remaining 21 stitches
loosely.

LEFT SHOULDER SEAM:
1. Sew front to back along left shoulder seam.

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 3,5 needles.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 4 stitches from right back neck edge, 26 stitches from back neck holder, 4
sts from left back neck edge, 21 stitches from left front neck edge, 16 stitches from front neck holder and 21 stitches from right
front neck edge. Total 92 stitches.
2. knit 3,0 cms (10 rows) in K1P1 ribbing.
3. Cast off loosely.

FINISHING: Sew sleeve top to armhole, sew any remaining seams. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 34 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 8 times, until 26 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 24,2 cms (58 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 43 stitches on size 3,5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 6,0 cms. Inc 6 stitches evenly across the row to 49 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4,5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row once, then every 8th row 11 times to 73 stitches (95 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 42,0 cms (102 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 5 stitches at beg of next two rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 10 times, then dec 1 st at
each end of every 3rd row twice, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 9 times. Cast off remaining 21 stitches
loosely.

LEFT SHOULDER SEAM:
1. Sew front to back along left shoulder seam.

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 3,5 needles.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 4 stitches from right back neck edge, 29 stitches from back neck holder, 4
sts from left back neck edge, 21 stitches from left front neck edge, 17 stitches from front neck holder and 21 stitches from right
front neck edge. Total 96 stitches.
2. knit 3,0 cms (10 rows) in K1P1 ribbing.
3. Cast off loosely.

3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row 5 times, then every 8th row 8 times to 78 stitches (99 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 44,0 cms (106 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 6 stitches at beg of next two rows. knit 44 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row.
Cast off remaining 22 stitches loosely.

LEFT SHOULDER SEAM:
1. Sew front to back along left shoulder seam.

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 3,5 needles.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 4 stitches from right back neck edge, 30 stitches from back neck holder, 4
sts from left back neck edge, 23 stitches from left front neck edge, 18 stitches from front neck holder and 23 stitches from right
front neck edge. Total 102 stitches.
2. knit 3,0 cms (10 rows) in K1P1 ribbing.
3. Cast off loosely.
