Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 30,0 cms (66 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 8
rows until 73 stitches remaining.
4. knit even until armhole measures 23,6 cms (52 rows).
5. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 7 stitches at beginning of next 4 rows. Cast off 8 stitches at beginning of following 2 rows.
6. Total 124 rows (excluding hem) with 29 stitches remaining for back of neck. Place stitches on holder.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 41 stitches on size 5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 7,0 cms. Inc 2 stitches evenly across the row to 43 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 30,0 cms (66 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 4th row 12 times, until 22 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 23,6 cms (52 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 39 stitches on size 5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 6,0 cms. Inc 3 stitches evenly across the row to 42 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 4 times, then every 9th row 6 times to 62 stitches (86 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 42,0 cms (94 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 4 stitches at beg of next two rows (54 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every row once, then dec 1
st at each end of every 2nd row 16 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every row once. Cast off remaining 18 stitches
loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 6 circular needle.
Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 44 stitches from right front neck edge, 29 stitches from back neck holder, ,
44 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 117 stitches. Decrease from 117 to 100 by: P 10 P2tog *(P 4 P2tog)* 16 times
P 9
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 33 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 34 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 9 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 16 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 14,0 cms (32 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 5 needles pick up and knit 59 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 7 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 1,3 cms above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 8,9 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 33 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 34 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 9 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the

KNIT A TENSION SWATCH FIRST

BACK:
1. Cast on 102 stitches on size 5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 8,0 cms. Inc 3 stitches evenly across the row to 105 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 30,9 cms (68 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 5 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 14
rows until 81 stitches remaining.
4. knit even until armhole measures 26,4 cms (58 rows).
5. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 8 stitches at beginning of next 6 rows.
6. Total 132 rows (excluding hem) with 33 stitches remaining for back of neck. Place stitches on holder.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 50 stitches on size 5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 8,0 cms. Inc 1 stitches evenly across the row to 51 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 30,9 cms (68 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 0,9 cms (2 rows), with 45
sts remaining. Continue armhole shaping until 16 rows knitted from beginning of armhole. AT THE SAME
TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 3 times, then every 4th row 11
times, until 24 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 26,4 cms (58 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 44 stitches on size 5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 6,0 cms. Inc 4 stitches evenly across the row to 48 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row 5 times, then every 8th row 7 times to 72 stitches (91 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 44,0 cms (98 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 5 stitches at beg of next two rows (62 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every row 3 times, then dec
1 st at each end of every 2nd row 15 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every row 3 times. Cast off remaining 20
sts loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 6 circular needle.
Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 47 stitches from right front neck edge, 33 stitches from back neck holder, ,
47 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 127 stitches. Decrease from 127 to 110 by: P 7 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 16 times
P 6
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 36 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 38 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 9 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 18 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 15,0 cms (34 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 5 needles pick up and knit 63 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 7 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 1,4 cms above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
