Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

1. Cast on 124 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,8 ins.
Increase 7 stitches evenly across the row to 131 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,5 ins (100 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 7 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 10
rows until 107 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 9,0 ins (72 rows), with 107 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 35 stitches. Slip the next 37 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 35 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, until 32 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 9,0 ins (row 72), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 10 stitches at armhole edge, then cast off 11 stitches at armhole edge twice.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 60 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,8 ins.
Increase 3 stitches evenly across the row to 63 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,5 ins (100 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 3 times, then every 4th row 15
times, until 32 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 9,0 ins (72 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 55 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,3 ins.
Increase 6 stitches evenly across the row to 61 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 11 times, then every 9th row 4 times to 91 stitches (124 rows total, excl. hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 16,5 ins (132 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 7 stitches at beg of next two rows (77 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 12 times,
then dec 1 st at each end of every 3rd row twice, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 11 times. Cast off
remaining 27 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 4 circular needle.
Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 62 stitches from right front neck edge, 4 stitches from right back neck
edge, 37 stitches from back neck holder, 4 stitches from left back neck edge, , 62 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 169
sts. Decrease from 169 to 146 by: P 7 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 22 times P 6
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 48 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 50 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 9 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 26 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 5,5 ins (44 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 91 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 9 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,7 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

REQUIRED AMOUNT OF YARN: ( APPROX. ):

3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row once, then every 8th row 15 times to 95 stitches (127 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 16,7 ins (134 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 7 stitches at beg of next two rows (81 stitches rem). knit 54 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of every
2nd row. Cast off remaining 27 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 4 circular needle.
Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 64 stitches from right front neck edge, 5 stitches from right back neck
edge, 37 stitches from back neck holder, 5 stitches from left back neck edge, , 64 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 175
sts. Decrease from 175 to 150 by: P 3 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 24 times P 2
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 49 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 52 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 7 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the

edge, 40 stitches from back neck holder, 4 stitches from left back neck edge, , 66 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 180
sts. Decrease from 180 to 154 by: P 14 P2tog *(P 4 P2tog)* 25 times P 14
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 50 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.

1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 67 stitches from right front neck edge, 5 stitches from right back neck
edge, 40 stitches from back neck holder, 5 stitches from left back neck edge, , 67 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 184
sts. Decrease from 184 to 158 by: P 4 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 25 times P 3
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 51 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 56 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 9 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 28 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 6,0 ins (48 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 94 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 11 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,8 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

BACK:
1. Cast on 150 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 6 stitches evenly across the row to 156 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,0 ins (104 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 8 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 20
rows until 120 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 10,3 ins (82 rows), with 120 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 39 stitches. Slip the next 42 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 39 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 4 times, until 35 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 10,3 ins (row 82), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 11 stitches at armhole edge, then cast off 12 stitches at armhole edge twice.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 73 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 3 stitches evenly across the row to 76 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,0 ins (104 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 9 times, then every 4th row 13
times, until 35 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 10,3 ins (82 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 63 stitches on size 3 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,5 ins.
Increase 7 stitches evenly across the row to 70 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row 11 times, then every 8th row 7 times to 106 stitches (133 rows total, excl. hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 17,3 ins (140 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 8 stitches at beg of next two rows (90 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every row once, then dec 1
st at each end of every 2nd row 28 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every row once. Cast off remaining 30 stitches
loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:

Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 69 stitches from right front neck edge, 6 stitches from right back neck
edge, 42 stitches from back neck holder, 6 stitches from left back neck edge, , 69 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 192
sts. Decrease from 192 to 166 by: P 8 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 25 times P 7
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
