Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

1. Cast on 73 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,8 ins.
Increase 4 stitches evenly across the row to 77 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,2 ins (58 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 4 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 6
rows until 63 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 9,3 ins (44 rows), with 63 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 21 stitches. Slip the next 21 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 21 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row twice, until 19 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 9,3 ins (row 44), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 9 stitches at armhole edge, then cast off 10 stitches at armhole edge.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 36 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,8 ins.
Increase 2 stitches evenly across the row to 38 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,2 ins (58 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 3 times, then every 4th row 8 times,
until 19 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 9,3 ins (44 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 33 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,3 ins.
Increase 4 stitches evenly across the row to 37 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 9 times to 55 stitches (72 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 16,5 ins (80 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 4 stitches at beg of next two rows (47 stitches rem). knit 32 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of every
2nd row. Cast off remaining 15 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 6.5 circular needle.
Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 36 stitches from right front neck edge, 3 stitches from right back neck
edge, 21 stitches from back neck holder, 3 stitches from left back neck edge, , 36 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 99
sts. Decrease from 99 to 86 by: P 7 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 12 times P 6
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 29 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 28 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 11 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 12 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 5,5 ins (28 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 5.5 needles pick up and knit 52 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 5 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,6 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 37 stitches from right front neck edge, 3 stitches from right back neck
edge, 21 stitches from back neck holder, 3 stitches from left back neck edge, , 37 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 101
sts. Decrease from 101 to 88 by: P 8 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 12 times P 7
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 30 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.

1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 39 stitches from right front neck edge, 3 stitches from right back neck
edge, 24 stitches from back neck holder, 3 stitches from left back neck edge, , 39 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 108
sts. Decrease from 108 to 94 by: P 8 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 13 times P 7
MOSS ST PATTERN. (Even number of stitches).
Row 1: *K1 P1*, repeat to end.
Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
2. Break yarn. With the right side of garment facing, slip the first 31 stitches of the right neckline onto the right needle.
Join the yarn and knit the next 32 stitches in pattern across the back neckline. *(Turn the knit. knit in pattern
across the previous row, then a further 2 stitches.)* 7 times. Repeat from * to * increasing 1 st, so adding 3 stitches at the
end of the row 16 times, until all neckline stitches are being knitted.
3. knit even until back of collar measures 6,0 ins (30 rows). Cast off loosely in pattern.
4. Finishing. When the button bands have been attached, sew the collar ends to the top of the button bands.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 5.5 needles pick up and knit 54 stitches
(approximately 3 stitches for each 4 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of V-neck shaping.
2. knit in moss (seed) stitch for 7 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 5 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one where the V-neck shaping
begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,8 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

BACK:
1. Cast on 88 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 4 stitches evenly across the row to 92 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,1 ins (62 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 5 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 12
rows until 70 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 10,1 ins (48 rows), with 70 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 23 stitches. Slip the next 24 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 23 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row twice, until 21 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 10,1 ins (row 48), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 10 stitches at armhole edge, then cast off 11 stitches at armhole edge.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 43 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 2 stitches evenly across the row to 45 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,1 ins (62 rows), excl. hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. AT THE SAME TIME,
4. Shape neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) of next row, then every 3rd row 3 times, then every 4th row 9 times,
until 21 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 10,1 ins (48 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 37 stitches on size 5.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,5 ins.
Increase 5 stitches evenly across the row to 42 stitches total.
2. Change to size 6.5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row 3 times, then every 8th row 7 times to 62 stitches (77 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 17,3 ins (84 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 5 stitches at beg of next two rows (52 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 8 times,
then dec 1 st at each end of every 3rd row twice, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 7 times. Cast off
remaining 18 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

V FRONT NECK SHAWL COLLAR:

Instructions below are for shawl collar and button/buttonhole bands knitted separately. Optionally, you can
knit them all in one piece on the smaller size circular needle.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 40 stitches from right front neck edge, 3 stitches from right back neck
edge, 24 stitches from back neck holder, 3 stitches from left back neck edge, , 40 stitches from left front neck edge. Total 110
sts. Decrease from 110 to 96 by: P 9 P2tog *(P 5 P2tog)* 13 times P 8

Row 2: *P1 K1*, repeat to end. Repeat these two rows.
