Tips for my basic knitting patterns

1 First you knit your knitting swatch, if you want to knit in a cable stitch pattern, knit your swatch with 1 or more cables,
2 then determine your gauge, now you can choose a knitting pattern with the right gauge, this way it will always fit,
3 no need for special yarns or needles size, you decide which yarn you use and which gauge you use, so easy.

The length and quality of the fiber in a knitting yarn determines its texture, luster, strength and hand.
Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.
Your sweater or cardigan will pill less if you make the stitches tighter, so do not knit too loosely.
Knitting Yarns containing a mixture of fiber lengths are softer, fuzzier and less strong.
Tightly twisted knitting yarns display the texture of a knitted pattern to its best advantage.
Choose a knitting yarn with cotton, 50 % cotton and 50 % acryl or 50 % wool, would be a perfect choice.

Increase 7 stitches evenly across the row to 120 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,5 ins (94 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 6 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 10
rows until 98 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 9,1 ins (68 rows), with 98 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 32 stitches. Slip the next 34 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 32 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, until 29 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 9,1 ins (row 68), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 9 stitches at armhole edge, then cast off 10 stitches at armhole edge twice.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 55 stitches on size 3.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,8 ins.
Increase 4 stitches evenly across the row to 59 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 12,5 ins (94 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 5,9 ins (43 rows), with 48 stitches
remaining.
4. Shape neck. Wrong side of knit facing. knit 39 stitches. Slip last 9 stitches to holder. Next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge
(right end) every row 10 times, until 29 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 9,1 ins (68 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 51 stitches on size 3.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,3 ins.
Increase 5 stitches evenly across the row to 56 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 8th row 10 times, then every 9th row 4 times to 84 stitches (116 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 16,5 ins (124 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 6 stitches at beg of next two rows (72 stitches rem).
Decrease 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 11 times, then
dec 1 st at each end of every 3rd row twice, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 11 times. Cast off
remaining 24 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 3.5 needles.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 9 stitches from right front neck holder, 27 stitches from right front neck
edge, 4 stitches from right back neck edge, 34 stitches from back neck holder, 4 stitches from left back neck edge, , 27 stitches from
left front neck edge and 9 stitches from left front neck holder. Total 114 stitches.
2. knit 1,0 ins (10 rows) in K1P1 ribbing.
3. Cast off loosely.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3.5 needles pick up and knit 146 stitches
(approximately 6 stitches for each 7 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and top of collar band.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 9 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 7 buttons, the first one 0,5 ins above the band bottom, the last one 0,5 ins below the band top.
The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,5 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. knit buttonhole band as for button band, knitting buttonholes at the marked positions.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING: 1. Sew all seams, darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.

STITCH OR KNITTING GAUGE, AND TENSION: depends on the pattern of stitches in the fabric and the tension of the
individual knitter or crocheter ( or how tightly one knits or crochets, and thick or thin yarns produce different stitches ).

BACK:
1. Cast on 138 stitches on size 3.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 5 stitches evenly across the row to 143 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,1 ins (98 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole shaping. Cast off 7 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 18
rows until 111 stitches remaining. Continue until armhole measures 10,1 ins (76 rows), with 111 stitches remaining.
4. Shape neck. knit both sides at the same time. knit 36 stitches. Slip the next 39 stitches to a holder.
Now attach another ball of yarn and continue across second half of stitches, and
knit remaining 36 stitches. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times, until 33 stitches remain.
5. At the same time, when armhole measures 10,1 ins (row 76), start shoulder shaping.
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off 11 stitches at armhole edge 3 times.

FRONT: Cardigan right side knitted first.
1. Cast on 67 stitches on size 3.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 ins.
Increase 2 stitches evenly across the row to 69 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch. knit even until piece measures 13,1 ins (98 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole. Dec for armhole at left end, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 6,4 ins (47 rows), with 53 stitches
remaining.
4. Shape neck. Wrong side of knit facing. knit 44 stitches. Slip last 9 stitches to holder. Next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge
(right end) every row 11 times, until 33 stitches remain.
5. knit even until armhole measures 10,1 ins (76 rows).
6. Shoulder shaping. Cast off as for back.
7. Left cardigan front. knit as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 58 stitches on size 3.5 needles. knit in K1P1 ribbing for 2,5 ins.
Increase 6 stitches evenly across the row to 64 stitches total.
2. Change to size 4.5 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 7th row 5 times, then every 8th row 11 times to 96 stitches (123 rows total, excluding hem).
4. knit even until sleeve measures 17,3 ins (130 rows), excluding hem.
5. Shape cap. Cast off 7 stitches at beg of next two rows (82 stitches rem). knit 54 rows, while dec 1 st at each end of every
2nd row. Cast off remaining 28 stitches loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

ROUND (CREW) FRONT NECK SINGLE BAND COLLAR:
--- by hand on size 3.5 needles.
1. With right side of knit facing, pick up and knit 9 stitches from right front neck holder, 29 stitches from right front neck
edge, 4 stitches from right back neck edge, 39 stitches from back neck holder, 4 stitches from left back neck edge, , 29 stitches from
left front neck edge and 9 stitches from left front neck holder. Total 123 stitches.
2. knit 1,3 ins (12 rows) in K1P1 ribbing.
3. Cast off loosely.

BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men. Using size 3.5 needles pick up and knit 156 stitches
(approximately 6 stitches for each 7 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and top of collar band.
2. knit in 1x1 ribbing for 11 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 7 buttons, the first one 0,6 ins above the band bottom, the last one 0,6 ins below the band top.
The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 3,8 ins apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
