Crochet flowers, doily and granny square

Traditionally a granny square was made up of only 2 stitches; chain and double crochet.
Starting at the centre, with chain stitches joining the round with a slip-stitch.
Than in each round, combining groups of double crochets, forming shells,
with chain stitches to separate the shells and creating corners.
The granny square was made in 5 rounds, but you can make as many rounds as you want.

The modern granny square has more than chain and double crochet stitches.
Combining all kind of crochet stitches and yarns will make a beautiful project.
Change not only the colors in each round but change the yarns too, fuzzy or mohair with cotton yarn.

You can use any yarns you want, leftovers and luxury yarns, metallic threads, fine ribbons, silk yarns and
don't forget the beads. They are the icing on the cake.

I grew up in the sixties and there was a time, clothes were made of nothing else than granny squares.
Granny square vests, granny square shorts, granny square hats.
These clothes were particularly for young people.
They were originally hand made or from the store, with a hand made look.
Flower power dresses with a top of granny squares and the skirt was made of fabric.
Bags of colorful squares. And dressed with this kind of clothes you would be called a hippy.
A synonym for a loose life style, not appreciated by older people. ( my father for instance !) 
And believe me, it was so innocent in those days.

Although particular color and pattern schemes for granny squares change with time,
this class of motif is still popular among crocheters. Multicolor granny squares are an effective way to
use up small amounts of yarn left over from other projects and basic granny square motifs do not require
