Samplers are charming,
antique embroidered panels sporting carefully stitched alphabets and
biblical verses. They represent a more complex reality: limited
educational opportunities for young girls, and then only for the well to
do.
Most young women stopped making samplers after their marriage. In the 18th century, samplers may have been a major
courting tool for girls at the proper age, but what we call 'fancy work'
was stopped after a girl married because she was much too busy marking
things, sewing initials on all the good textiles in the house, making
clothes and mending.
Samplers date to
late-16th-century England, when women covered long, narrow pieces of
linen with bands of neatly stitched, silk-embroidered letters and texts.
The samplers were meant to demonstrate the skill of the embroiderer and
incorporated several kinds of stitches. Early English samplers were done with reversible stitches so the backs
looked almost as nice as the fronts.
Motifs for embroidery could be
found in pattern books that circulated to all the English colonies,
which is why so many early American samplers were once considered
English. They were also made with products imported from England: linen
and silk floss. Only occasionally were samplers made on homespun
materials.

Applique or appliqué is a French needlework technique in which
pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewn onto a bottom
piece of fabric to create designs. It is particularly suitable for
work which is to be seen from a distance, such as in banner-making. A
famous example of applique is the Hastings Embroidery.
Applique is used extensively in quilting. "Dresden Plate" and
"Sunbonnet Sue" are two examples of traditional American quilt blocks
that are constructed with both patchwork and applique. Baltimore album
quilts, Broderie perse, Hawaiian quilts, Amish quilts and the ralli
quilts of India and Pakistan also use applique. |
