Traditional Fair Isle patterns normally had no more than two or three consecutive stitches of any given colour, because they were stranded and too many consecutive stitches of one colour means a very long strand of the other, quite easy to catch with a finger or button. A more modern variation is woven Fair Isle, where the unused strand is held in slightly different positions relative to the needles and thereby woven into the fabric, still invisible from the front, but trapped closely against the back of the piece. This permits a nearly limitless variety of patterns with considerably larger blocks of colour. How a cardigan sweater is cropped, lengthened or tailored very much dictates its fashion statement. De opvallende Fair Isle patronen hebben horizontale banden van kleine herhalende motieven en vormen in felle kleuren. Bijna alle patronen zijn symmetrisch. Oudere kledingstukken waren in de grijze en bruine tinten van de inheemse schapen en natuurlijke kleurstoffen. Twee kleuren garen worden gebruikt in elke toer en de draad die niet in gebruik is wordt meegenomen over de achterkant. Hierdoor ontstaat een dubbele laag stof, waardoor Fair Isle kleding erg warm en bijna weerbestendig is. Kleuren worden gebruikt in de patronen om ze goed uit te laten komen en grote lussen worden niet gemaakt. De spandraden of lussen zijn in principe niet langer dan 5 steken, anders moet je ze kruisen aan de achterkant van het breiwerk. Heel veel Noorse gebreide kledingstukken zijn gevoerd omdat je anders met je vingers in de lussen zou blijven haken. Kleding met Fair Isle patronen worden gemaakt met heel veel verschillende motieven en combinaties van strepen. |

In Edinburgh, a good selection of Fair Isles may be found at Jenners or Forsyth, both on Princes Street. Men's pullovers with handknit yokes sell for about $40 to $54. In London, shops selling authentic Fair Isles include Scotch House at Knightsbridge (about $33), Simpson (Piccadilly) Ltd. (about $46) or W. Bill of Bond Street, where orders are accepted for sweaters handknit to order in the Shetlands. Customers may specify colors and patterns, at a cost of about $92. |
