The basic knit fabric (usually called a stocking or stockinette pattern) has a definite right side and wrong side. Because the yarn holding rows together is all on the front, and the yarn holding side-by-side stitches together is all on the back, stockinette stitch has a strong tendency to curl toward the front on the top and bottom, and toward the back on the left and right side.

Knitting yarn made from long fibers will pill less, be smoother, stronger, more lustrous and more elastic.

Gauge (Stocking Stitch over 4 in = 10 cm): 27,0 stitches by 36,0 rows.
Body knit by hand on 2.5 mm needles
Ribbing knit by hand on 2 mm needles

SHORT ROWING:
1. Sprint Borders are knitted using short row shaping at the corners. You may find using a marker helpful to reduce
the amount of counting. The instructions below are fairly brief and are of the form: [short row n1 stitches every other
row x1 times]. This means:
1A. Wrong side facing. knit the given number (n1) of stitches less one. Yarn at back. Slip the next st and wrap the yarn
around the st to the front. Return the slipped st to the LH needle without knitting it. (Wrapping the last stitch is
optional - not wrapping makes lacey holes that may look good on a shawl).
1B. Turn the piece and knit to the end of the row.
1C. Repeat steps 1A and 1B as required (x1 times), knitting n1 more stitches each time.

MAIN PANEL:
1. Cast on 190 stitches on size 2.5 needles. Start knit in Stocking Stitch.
2. knit even for 252 rows (70,0 cms).
3. Cast off all stitches.

BORDER PANEL:
1. Cast on 35 stitches loosely on size 2 needles.
2. knit in chosen border pattern around the shawl, knitting short rows at the corners and grafting the border to the
main panel as follows:
... Short row 2 stitches every other row 11 times, then 1 stitches every other row 12 times.
... Grafting: knit the last stitch of every other border row together with a stitch from the main panel, in the
approximate ratio of border rows to main panel stitches/rows as detailed below.
2A. After cast-on, knit 1 row across all stitches. knit short row increase shaping until 47 rows completed.
2B. Starting at lower left corner of shawl, right side facing, knit 252 rows of border pattern, grafting to the main panel
(approx 1 border rows to each 1 main panel rows).
2C. At the corner, knit short rows in reverse order (decreasing to 1 st), knit 2 rows across all stitches, then knit short
rows again (increasing from 1 st to 35 stitches).
2D. knit 252 rows of border, grafting to the top of the shawl (approx 4 border rows to each 3 main panel stitches).
2E. Repeat for the other side and bottom, until the border has been knitted completely around the main panel.
2F. knit a final short row shaping (decreasing to 1 st), then knit 1 row even.
3. Cast off loosely.

EDGING:
1. Cast on 11 stitches loosely.
2. knit in chosen edging pattern around the shawl, knitting short rows at the corners and grafting the edging to the
border panel as follows:
... Short row 2 stitches every other row 3 times, then 1 stitches every other row 4 times.
... Grafting: knit the last stitch of each right side edging row together with a stitch from the border panel (match
one row edging to one row border, as they are knitted at the same gauge).
2A. After cast-on, knit 1 row across all stitches. knit short row increase shaping until 15 rows completed.
2B. Starting at lower left corner of shawl, right side facing, knit 346 rows of edging pattern, grafting to the border
panel.
2C. At the corner, knit short rows in reverse order (decreasing to 1 st), knit 2 rows across all stitches, then knit short
rows again (increasing from 1 st to 11 stitches).
2D. Repeat for the other three sides, until the edging has been knitted completely around the border panel.
2F. knit a final short row shaping (decreasing to 1 st), then knit 1 row even.
3. Cast off loosely.

FINISHING:
1. Sew or graft the border corner(s) together. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
2. BLOCK. Really, it makes all the difference.

3. Cast off loosely.

EDGING:
1. Cast on 12 stitches loosely.
2. knit in chosen edging pattern around the shawl, knitting short rows at the corners and grafting the edging to the

2B. Starting at lower left corner of shawl, right side facing, knit 384 rows of edging pattern, grafting to the border
panel.
2C. At the corner, knit short rows in reverse order (decreasing to 1 st), knit 2 rows across all stitches, then knit short
rows again (increasing from 1 st to 12 stitches).
2D. Repeat for the other three sides, until the edging has been knitted completely around the border panel.
2F. knit a final short row shaping (decreasing to 1 st), then knit 1 row even.
3. Cast off loosely.
