 ABCany women love to knit and crochet, but anyone close to them who knows nothing about crocheting is hard pressed to find great gift ideas they'll love. Well if you're also looking for gift ideas to give a loved on in your life that crochets, here are some excellent suggestions for you...

Crochet Yarn - This may seem obvious and mundane... possibly even boring... but believe it or not most ladies who love to crochet are also completely addicted to yarn. They love trying different colors, textures and combinations for all sorts of crochet projects. So, yarn is the number one best gift idea for crochet lovers that's always sure to be a hit.

A chain, the foundation, formed by a succession of loops drawn one through the other.

Crochet may be divided into;
Single crochet;
where one loop only is made on the hook, and drawn through each stitch.
It is lighter and thinner than double crochet.
Double crochet;
where two loops are kept on the hook, and the yarn drawn through both before the stitch is finished.
This is the crochet stitch generally practiced, and that used for working table-covers, etc.
A repetition of this process, alternately backwards and forwards, from right to left, and from left to right, will give the first row. The work will be the same on both sides, producing, by turns, one raised and one sunken row.
Double stitch crochet;
in this, both meshes of the chain are taken. It is principally employed for the soles of shoes, and where extra
thickness is required, but it is not suitable for working patterns.
Elastic crochet;
is worked alternately in rows backwards and forwards, from right to left and from left to right, always taking the under mesh of the chain.
Open crochet;
is composed of chains, of five stitches each in length, forming loops, each fifth stitch being crocheted to the centre stitch of the corresponding loop in the preceding row, as shown in the engraving. It is mostly used for purses and bags.

Crochet is more suitable than knitting for joining pieces of fabric and knit patterns for sweaters may incorporate crochet for finishing. Crochet can add borders or surface embellishment to both knit and crochet fabric. Crocheted fabric uses 1/3 more yarn than knitted fabric.
Crochet produces a thicker fabric than knitting, and tends to have less "give" than knitted fabric. And, generally speaking, crochet technique produces fabric faster than knitting.

A steel crochet hook is generally advisable ;
with expert workers, it makes the most even stitches, but it is easier to work with a plastic hook.

TO MAKE A CHAIN (written ch) , form a loop on the thread, insert the hook in it, and draw the thread in another loop through this. Continue this to form a succession of stitches.

SLIP-STITCH (written ss) is made by drawing a thread at once through any given stitch and the loop which is on the needle.

SINGLE CROCHET (written sc)--Having a loop on the needle, insert the hook in a stitch, and draw the thread through in a loop. You then have two on the hook; draw the thread through both at once.

DOUBLE CROCHET (dc)--Twist the thread round the hook before inserting it in the stitch, through which you draw the thread in a loop. Three loops being then on the needle, draw the thread through two, and then through the one just formed and the remaining one.

TREBLE CROCHET (tc) and LONG TREBLE (long tc) are worked in the same manner; in the former the thread is put twice, in the latter three times, round the hook, before inserting it into the stitch.

Round or cylindrical patterns are simple to produce with a regular crochet hook, but cylindrical knitting requires either a set of circular needles or four or five special double pointed needles.
Free form crochet can create interesting shapes in several dimensions because new stitches can be made independently of previous stitches almost anywhere in the crocheted piece.

When beads are used, they should be strung on the yarn with a needle.
When beads are introduced, the wrong side of the work becomes the right.
It is possible to crochet with the beads on the right side,
but they never lay so firmly, nor is it the proper way of using them. Beads are great for purses.

When you are in doubt, how to wash your crocheted items, wash them in cold water and use a very mild detergent, like Woollite. This can prevent shrinkage in the wash cycle.
 ABCor tension swatches stitches and rows file

This is a .xls file, with every gauge between 10 and 30, you do not have to calculate anymore

Just look up the number of stitches of your tension swatch , measured over 10 cm's and which size you want to knit, then find the number of stitches you need.
the same thing with the total amount of rows you need, at a specific length or size. this way knit or crochet with your own yarn is easy.
