turning chains per stitch
 |
Turning chains At the end of each row or round, a turning chain is used to bring the yarn and crochet hook up to the height required for working the next row
or round. The number of chains required to make the turning chain depends on the stitch being or, on you tension of the yarn
or, sometimes, on the yarn being used. If the side edge looks like “pulled” try using 1 or 2 chains more. When working back
and forth in rows or in pattern sets, one or more ch sts must be worked at the beg of each row, with the turning ch
corresponding in height to the pattern sts to keep the edges even. The number of ch sts needed depends on the st or particular pattern
being
worked. Itīs best to make a sample or test piece. As a rule, turning a sc row requires 1 ch st; a hdc row, 2 ch sts; a dc row, 3 ch sts
and so on.
A row of ch sts is called a chain (ch). A ch is used as a base for most crochetwork.
Ch sts are used in countless patterns and as turning sts at the end of a row. |

Beg with a ch, sk the st nearest the hook, *insert the hook into the back half of the next st, YO, and draw the yarn through the 2 loops
on the hook at once*. This completes one sl st. Rep from * to * for the desired number of sl st on the chain, row, or rnd. |
Crochet rows and roundsCrochet can be worked in rows or rounds. When working in rows the work is turned, as in knitting, to start a new row. At the beginning of the new row, you use 1 or more turning chains. Many patterns, such as hats, bags, socks or baby booties,
are worked circularly (or in rounds). The last stitch of each round is connected to the first stitch with a slip stitch. Stitches can be
made in front, back or both loops. When crocheting only in front or back loops, ridges will appear and it will look like knitwork.

Fur or loop stitch
This technique can be worked both in rows and in rounds. The loops form on the reverse side of the crochetwork.
At once time, only some crochet work had the loops facing outward such as in the boyīs cap shown in the drawint below.
Other crochetwork was made so that the loops faced inward, such as for slippers, muffs, or foot warmers.
There are many ways to make loop sts. You can use a finger to help or you can work over a piece of cardboard or a ruler
to form the width of the loops. |

crochet with beads
Bead crochet has been particularly popular for making purses, tobacco pouches, and bags. Earlier pieces from the nineteenth century were
worked with fine silk thread and tiny beads made of glass, gold, silver, steel, or iron.
As a rule, bead crochet follows a charted pattern.
Worked in sc in to the back of the st, the bead rests on the reverse side. All the beads must first be threaded onto the yarn.
Itīs
important that the beads get threaded onto the yarn in the correct row sequence, which is the revers of the
pattern (the crochetwork is done from the opposite side from which the beads will rest on).
If you donīt want to put all of the beads on the thread at once, you can thread the beads needed for a short distance,
work them up, cut the thread, add a new group of beads, and continue with the bead crochet, working over the yarn ends for 4 to 6 sts so
that there arenīt too many ends to sew in afterwards.
To work a bead in sc:
Insert the hook into the back of the st, YO and draw the yarn through leaving 2 loops on the hook, move a bead up to the 2 loops, YO,
and draw the yarn through the loops.
The beads
are fixed to the back side of the crochetwork.
Bead crochet can also be done in dc. In this case the bead is worked in before the last 2 loops are cast off. |
