How to do Filet Crochet
Figuring the Starting Chain:
NOTE: In both instances, for the second and each subsequent meshes,
the last dc of the previous mesh is the first dc of the next mesh. 3) If working the chart in 3-dc mesh, multiply the number of squares across the bottom of the chart by 2 and add one. This is your starting chain. THEN look to see if the first square on the chart is an open mesh or a solid mesh. For an open mesh, add 4 to the starting chain (counts as dc, ch1). For a solid mesh, add 3 to the starting chain (counts as the first dc). 4) If working the chart in 4-dc mesh, multiply the number of squares across the bottom of the chart by 3 and add one. This is your starting chain. THEN look to see if the first square of the chart is an open mesh or a solid mesh. For an open mesh, add 5 to the starting chain (counts as dc, ch 2). For a solid mesh, add 3 to the starting chain (counts as the first dc).
Increasing and Decreasing: 1) To increase a space (or open mesh) at the end of a row, ch 2, dtr ( yo 3 times) into same place as previous double crochet. The Dtr makes the outer edges of the increased space.
2) To increase a block (or solid mesh) at the end of a row,
work a trc into same place as previous dc,
3) To decrease at the beginning of a row, turn work and sl st into top of last dc and in each of next 2 ch (or dc's if the last square of previous row is a solid mesh) and into top of next dc.
