Circular knittinggraphs, color charts for round yokes  sweater round yoke

Of all the different types of needlework, knitting is one of the most popular.
Knitting is a specific type of needlework that is identified by the process of looped stitches pulled through one another. Knitting is commonly used to make clothing and accessories such as hats, scarves, sweaters and gloves, as well as blankets and afgans. Most commercially produced knitted items are made with knitting machines; their high speed is indispensable for meeting the demands of the world economy. Knitting has gone through a recent resurgence in popularity as a craft and hobby.

One of the great things about knitting is that you can make a wide variety of items with the same relatively simple steps. Just select a different type of yarn and a different variation in your stitch, and you can come up with a very different end product.

The demographics of knitting are changing as well. Knitting used to be the sole preserve of primarily older women. More and more, however, knitting is becoming popular with younger generations. Indeed, some studies show that knitting has risen in popularity among the 25 to 35 age group by as much as 150%.

Different types of knitting

The two main types of straight-needle knitting are weft knitting and warp knitting.
Weft knitting requires only one string of yarn at time, but can be more susceptible to snags and runs. Warp knitting, on the other hand, is usually done by machine, so when most people think of knitting, they are usually thinking of weft knitting.
Another important type of knitting that is commonly done by hand is circular knitting. This method uses a circular needle, and creates a tube of yarn when completed which is great for socks and other tubular garments.

What materials do you need to start knitting?

Knitting is an ancient and rudimentary craft.
As such, the materials that you need to knit are fairly basic; when it comes down to it, all you need to knit is some needles and some yarn.
You should pay close attention to the type of yarn you use, however, as it will have a significant impact on how your final product looks and feels. For instance, certain yarns are appropriate for stretchy materials, while other yarns will produce less stretchy, more solid final results.
The width and thickness of the yarn should be taken into account when selecting knitting needles to use. Picking out the yarn can be one of the more pleasant steps in making an item, as knitting yarn comes in a variety of colors and styles and it is always fun to play around with your imagination.
Some are solid colors, others have multiple colors for striping, and others include sparkles and other embellishments.

Circular knitting or knitting in the round, is a form of knitting that creates a seamless tube.
When knitting on circular needles or double points, the knitting is cast on and the circle of stitches is joined. Knitting is worked in rounds in a spiral.
ABCour gauge is different when working in the round than it would be worked flat on the same needle size. This is because purling is at a different tension than knitting. This presents problems with doing gauge swatches! Knit stitch by doing this: knit a row; slide the work to the other end of the cable needle or DPN; leaving a long strand of yarn in back. Something like this here.

Circular knitting, is a favorite way of knitting, much lesser mistakes are made !

Circular knitting patterns for round yokes, decrease rounds every .... row/ round.

If pattern = 8 x 5 read ; pattern is 8 stitches width and decrease every 5th round.

This means, you start knitting pattern over 8 stitches and repeat pattern across the row/ round
the total amount of stitches must be a multiple of 8

every 5th row / round is the decreasing round, by knitting 2 stitches together.

like this for pattern 8 x 5;

row 1 - 5; pattern width 8 stitches
row 6; knit every 7th en 8th stitch together

there are now 7 stitches left

row 7 - 10; continue knitting pattern over a multiple of 7 stitches
row 11; knit every 6th en 7th stitch together

row 12 - 15; continue knitting pattern over a multiple of 6 stitches
row 16; knit every 5th en 6th stitch together

row 17 - 20; continue knitting pattern over a multiple of 5 stitches
row 21; knit every 4th en 5th stitch together

row 22 - 25; continue knitting pattern over a multiple of 4 stitches
row 26; knit every 3rd en 4th stitch together

Warning;
the last rows/ rounds are not given in chart, there are not enough stitches left, to knit a pattern
knit these stitches in main color and in ribbing pattern

row 27 - 30; knit further over a multiple of 3 stitches
row 31; knit every 2nd en 3rd stitch together

row 32 - 35; knit further over a multiple of 2 stitches
row 36; cast off all stitches

steek technique for original Norwegian knitting

Traditional Fair Isle sweater construction usually involves knitting the body of the sweater in
the round, sewing or otherwise fastening the work securely where the arm holes are to go,
and then cutting the knit fabric to make the armholes. These cuts are known as steeks in
American knitting terminology, but not in the Shetland Isles where the Fair Isle technique was developed.

Circular knitting or knitting in the round is a form of knitting that creates a seamless tube.
When knitting circularly, the knitting is cast on and the circle of stitches is joined.
Knitting is worked in rounds (the equivalent of rows in flat knitting) in a spiral.
Originally, circular knitting was done using a set of four or five double-pointed needles.
Later, circular needles were invented, which can also be used to do circular knitting:
the circular needle looks like two short knitting needles connected by a cable between them.

Many types of sweaters are traditionally knit in the round; Norwegian ski sweaters are knit this way.
Even cardigans — the knitter makes a Norwegian-style pullover and then the knitting is stitched with
a machine to prevent unraveling. The sweater is then cut down the front to open the cardigan up.

A band for buttons is added by knitting or sewing on a tightly knitted band, often embellished with
woven braid. Icelandic sweaters are also done in the round, typically.
