. MAKE A TENSION SWATCH FIRST !!
STITCH OR KNITTING GAUGE, AND TENSION: depends on the pattern of stitches in the fabric and the tension of the
individual knitter or crocheter ( or how tightly one knits or crochets, and thick or thin yarns produce different stitches ).
 Gauge (Stocking Stitch over 4 in = 10 cm): 21,0 sts by 28,0 rows.
Body knit by hand on 4 mm needles
Ribbing knit by hand on 3 mm needles

BACK:
1. Cast on 57 sts on size 3 needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 4,0 cms. Inc 3 sts evenly across the row to 60 sts total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. Work even until piece measures 12,1 cms (34 rows), excluding hem.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole. Continue until armhole measures 10,0 cms (28 rows),
4. Shape neck. Work both sides at the same time. Work 21 sts. With a second ball of yarn, cast off the next 18 sts.
Work remaining 21 sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row twice, until 19 sts remain.
5. Work even until armhole measures 11,4 cms (32 rows). Cast off 19 shoulder sts loosely.

FRONT: Cardigan right side worked first.
1. Cast on 27 sts on size 3 needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 4,0 cms. Inc 2 sts evenly across the row to 29 sts total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch. Work even until piece measures 12,1 cms (34 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at left end for armhole. Continue until armhole measures 6,4 cms (17 rows).
4. Shape neck. Wrong side of work facing. Work 24 sts. Cast off next 5 sts. Next row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge (right end) every row 5 times, until 19 sts remain.
5. Work even until armhole measures 11,4 cms (32 rows). Cast off 19 shoulder sts loosely.
6. Left cardigan front. Work as for right side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 29 sts on size 3 needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 3,0 cms. Inc 2 sts evenly across the row to 31 sts total.
2. Change to size 4 needles and Stocking Stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of every 4th row 4 times, then every 5th row 4 times to 47 sts (36 rows total, excluding hem).
4. Work even until sleeve measures 14,0 cms (40 rows), excluding hem.
5. Cast off loosely.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
1. Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.

SIMPLE HOOD:
1. Use an open (looped) cast on with 97 sts on size 3 needles.

2. Folded front band.

2. Work even for 12 rows, with lace holes for drawstring near the ends of row 3 (or row 9 for lace holes on outside of band).

3. To complete the band, graft the cast-on sts to the last row worked.

4. Change to size 4 needles and work 4 rows.

5. Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 2nd row 12 times, until 71 sts remain.
 6. Work even until piece measures 12,2 cms ( 34 rows), excluding front band. Cast off loosely.

    BUTTON BAND:
1. Start with left front for girls/women, right front for boys/men.
Using size 3 needles pick up and knit 56 sts (approximately 9 sts for each 10 rows along cardigan front) between bottom of hem and bottom of hood.
2. Work in 1x1 ribbing for 7 rows. Cast off loosely.
3. Mark positions for 6 buttons, the first one 0,8 cms above the band bottom, the last one 0,8 cms below the band top.
The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, approximately 4,2 cms apart.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1. Work buttonhole band as for button band, working buttonholes at the marked positions.
Check your knitting reference book for techniques.
2. Sew buttons at marked positions on the button band, being careful to align buttons with buttonholes.

FINISHING:
1. Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit. Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Sew back seam(s) of hood.

 Placing hood bands at center front, sew bottom of hood (including bands) to neckline. Thread a drawstring if required.

2. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
