Aran, lace and cable free knitting patterns for women ; knit a sweater
he choice of colors is critical to the design of a sweater.
The simplest choice is to use multiple shades of a single color (e.g.,
various shades of blue), perhaps accented with a contrasting color (e.g.
flecks of yellow).
The arrangement of shades on the sweater can have a significant visual
effect, due to the principle of chiaroscuro; dark shades tend to recede
and be smaller, whereas light shades advance and seem larger.
or example, vertical stripes with a light color in the middle and
dark colors on the sides has a slimming effect. Psychologically, bright
colors tend to be associated with straightforward, innocent or
extroverted personalities, whereas darker shades are associated with
more thoughtful, experienced and introverted personalities.

Contrasting colors may be chosen in various ways.
A common choice is to take a complementary colors from one of the
several color wheels (e.g., blue and orange, green and red), or to
choose a pairing that occurs in nature, e.g., yellow and red.
Traditionally an Aran jumper is made
from undyed cream-colored báinín (pronounced bawneen), a yarn made from
sheep's wool, sometimes "black-sheep" wool. They were originally made
with unwashed wool that still contained natural sheep lanolin, making it
to an extent water-repellent. Up to the seventies the island women spun
their own yarn on spinning wheels.
The jumper usually features 4–6
texture patterns each of which is about 2–4 inches in width, that move
down the sweater in columns from top to bottom. Usually the patterns are
symmetrical to a centre axis extending down the centre of the front and
back panel. The patterns also usually extend down the sleeves as well.
The same textured knitting are also used to make socks, hats, vests and
even skirts.
The first Aran knitting patterns were
published in the 1940s by Patons of England. Vogue magazine carried
articles on the garment in the 1950s, and jumper exports from the west
of Ireland to the United States began in the early 1950s.

The "temperature" of a color also affects its perceived depth.
Warm
colors have red or yellow tones (including orange and yellow-green) and
are associated psychologically with warmth and energy.
Cool colors have more bluish undertones (including purples,
aqua's and
greens) and are associated psychologically with serene, calm
personalities.
Warm colors tend to advance relative to cool colors, when both are
presented simultaneously. The first Aran sweaters or geansaís (ganseys) as the islanders called them, made their debut on young island boys in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They were worn for First Holy Communions or to Mass on Sundays. Made from the bawneen - "little white" in Irish - or homespun, undyed wool, many were knitted initially like socks "in the round," i.e. on four needles and, given that they were for
special, sacramental occasions, great effort and pride went into their design.
